“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th… “
– President George W. Bush, November 11, 2001
Today is that day again. The day that changed America forever. The day that we become one. More than 10 years after, this day still mark our hearts as a nation. As we remember this day today, let’s look back and reflect on what message 9/11 is telling us.
1. Life has unexpected twists, be sure to focus on what really matters.
Those that died that day did not know it was their last. They thought that day was just another day of their lives. Many have carefully planned what their day should be. However, out of nowhere, two planes hit the Twin Towers and it was the end for thousands.
So let’s each day as if it’s our last.
2. Be informed, equipped and ready what to do during emergencies.
What are we going to do when we are trapped in a building on fire? How can we prepare our families when a typhoon comes? What are the steps we need to take when an earthquake strikes? It’s good to have head knowledge on what the possible things we can do but it’s better to be ready. Keep a stack of canned goods, extra clothes, flashlights, bottled water… These are just few of the concrete steps of being prepared.
3. Help the needy.
Can you still remember the pain of those who lost a friend or relative during the day? Maybe some of us even know someone or have lost someone ourselves. However, it helps to know there are people who are there for us. People who listens and shows sympathy to what we’re going through.
So give flowers, food, clothing, etc. to those who are in need. Who knows, you might just be the angel sent from heaven who can bring the peace of heart in the storms of life they are going through that day.
4. Love the people around you.
Cherish every moment with everyone we love. Touch the life of a stranger. Spend quality time with family. Do a little chit-chat with a neighbor. Impact lives. Every time we spend with them counts for we don’t know what the future holds.
5. Appreciate people’s work.
If we can still remember a lot of policemen and paramedics died that day. Hospitals were filled so doctors and nurses were busy. People in all walks of life were all doing their part so our countrymen and our nation will have the justice and comfort we all needed that day. So treasure what people are doing. After all, it’s a world where everyone is connected.
